Background

Building Safety Codes can cause serious injuries and cost lives if not properly followed. In this case, improperly installed drainage outlet coverings allowed a small child to gain entry into the drainage system. Due to the inherit dangerous nature of drainage systems and low oxygen levels, the child lost consciousness and suffered brain injuries.

The family of the child claimed that the contractor who installed the drainage system and outlet coverings was negligent in their installation and liable for their child’s injury.

Outcome

Upon investigating the claim of negligence, I did discover that the spacing between the bars was greater than what was allowed by the building and safety code.
